Apple hiring for Hardware Engineers just spiked to a new all-time high, moving from an already-massive 1,286 positions a month ago to 1,329 unfilled positions today. Meanwhile, Software Engineer hiring has slowed at an equal clip.
This comes after a lull in Hardware Engineer hiring in the new year. With rumors that Apple is not only working on its next iPhones, laptops, its Siri digital assistant, and even homegrown computer processors, it's understandable that the company would now be focused on bringing in skilled hardware engineers as it looks to create its next generation of tech.
When focusing just on the past month, the spike in Hardware Engineering openings in the past week is even more evident:
Today's 1,329 openings count for a massive 27% of all open positions at Apple (out of a total 4,959 positions). In fact, when one adds other Engineering positions to the count (Software Engineering), the total Engineering openings at Apple is 2,466 - 50% of all openings.
Curiously, though - Software Engineering openings are on a slight decline during the same time period:
There is some minor patterning in the openings, with Design Verification Engineers being the most-common opening followed by Engineering Program Managers, Sensor Module Design Engineers, and Engineering Project Specialists:

Given that Apple is, after all, a product company, it makes sense that it would be focused on bringing in talented hardware engineers. Its laptop and desktop computers are getting long in the tooth both in terms of design and technology, the iPhone is no longer the technological marvel it once was, and the hyped HomePod is already lagging in sales.
