In a slightly backwards attempt to fend off holiday crowds during the pandemic, big box retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy shut their doors on Thanksgiving, and promptly reopened them for Black Friday. Store closures somewhat stalled foot traffic, which dropped 52.1% compared with last year, according to data from Sensormatic Solutions. On Thanksgiving Day, retail foot traffic fell by 94.9% year-over-year, Sensormatic Solutions reports. Week-to-date, traffic is down 45.2% across the US.
Even still, the stores that closed on Thanksgiving are the same ones that saw the most activity the following morning. These ten retailers had the highest Facebook 'Were Here' counts on Black Friday this year. Facebook's Were Here count measures how many check-ins, mobile device shares, status updates, comments, and photo location tags have been created at a business.

About the Data:
Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online, jobs, social and web traffic, product sales, and app ratings, and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue, and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
