As the high temperatures scorch the Earth, smartphone users are turning to tried and true apps to get them through the dog days of summer.
We track active user-rank data based on on Facebook login tokens (published by Amazon daily — we just track the data). This data, especially over time, gives us a good sense of what apps people are using most month by month.
July saw a particular spike in Match Group-owned Tinder ($MTCH), which was the number-one most logged-into app in July. Meanwhile, Candy Crush Saga and Spotify ($SPOT) continued to dominate active users charts, coming in second and third places, respectively. Subscribers can see the full list and data set here.

Why the apps dominate
Tinder has long been one of the most popular dating apps around. With summer being a major travel and outdoors season for many users, it’s unsurprising that Tinder received a boost in activity during the warm season. Other factors that may have contributed to Tinder’s rising popularity in July include the company’s addition of two new feature announcements. The dating platform introduced a Bitmoji integration in mid-July, along with a push for interracial relationship emojis, a campaign it’ helped champion this year.
While Tinder’s popularity tends to typically peak in late fall, aka “cuffing season,” this summer is seeing a change in users’ dating patterns.
Elsewhere, the forever-popular Candy Crush Saga retained its appeal with commuters everywhere, managing to come in second behind Tinder’s top usage-ranking. Meanwhile, newly-minted publicly traded startup Spotify saw a boost in Facebook logins, already a popular way to login to that app.
It appears the Swedish company’s push to scale up and staff its HQs around the world is paying off. Following its IPO in April, Spotify listed hundreds of job openings across its four offices in Stockholm, New York, London and Tokyo, with its NYC location boasting a whopping 71 positions for hire.
If this traffic data is any indication, folks sure are enjoying the summer heat. We like to imagine millions of sun-kissed app users Tinder swiping while streaming the latest Top 40 hits at a BBQ somewhere.
