That is not a typo. According to LinkedIn employee-count data that we track on a daily basis, since November 1, 2018, 82,845 more people have listed Amazon ($AMZN) as their employer.
Last November 1, LinkedIn showed 276,497 user profiles that listed Amazon as an employee. As of today, that number is 359,342. That means that, on average, on every day in the last year, 227 people added Amazon as their employer on LinkedIn every day.
These numbers may seem outrageous at first, but when one considers that Amazon has listed more than 30,000 openings on its careers sites every day since last April, it's understandable that at least a few hundred people are hired by the company on a daily basis.
Part of what's driving Amazon's hiring spree is the expiration of its shipping deal with FedEx, which put the company in a position of needing to add more last-mile staff to get packages to consumers. And, Amazon's operational expenses have been growing in no small part thanks to the arrival of thousands of new shipping, delivery and logistics hires.
As of the end of October, Amazon is hiring for close to 31,000 positions. And that's not even its peak: it was hiring for nearly 33,000 positions in July.
About the Data:
Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online - jobs, social and web traffic, product sales and app ratings - and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
