Juul ($PRIVATE:JUUL) labs, which raked in 77% of the US e-cigarette market in 2019, is in a period of acute slowdown and pivot as it navigates a litany of lawsuits and laws seeking to limit the way the company markets to young people.
As of this week, 4 of the 60 jobs posted to Juul's careers site are slated to be focused on "Youth Prevention". But beginning in July of 2018, the company began hiring for a "Relation Manager: PR, Public Health And Youth Education" in Israel. Then, in March 2019, the company added a "Sourcing Manager, Youth Prevention & Track & Trace".
That was the first time the "Youth Prevention" term showed up in Juul job listings, but certainly not the last. Since March 2019, Juul has listed 697 unique job listings with that term in their titles. This all comes at a time when Juul hiring overall is in the throes of what can only be called a virtual shutdown.
In August 2019, the e-cigarette company was hiring for 685 positions. As of this week, it lists just 60 openings on its recruiting websites. The massive slowdown came just as Juul became the subject of multiple lawsuits and legislation that accused the company of targeting teenagers with its products.
Before the hiring cuts, Juul was on what could only be described as an aggressive search for professionals who could help the company manage its image when it came to targeting young people.
In April 2019, Juul listed just one opening with the term "Youth" in its title. But by August, it had opened 21 such positions. Today, those openings are down to just 4. By far, the most common term found in these jobs is "Youth Prevention". One of the more recent job postings for a "Sr. Manager, Global Youth Prevention" is slated to report to the company's San Francisco office. In August 2019, Juul created two new teams: "Retail Access Control Standards" and "Corporate Responsibility", which appear to house most of the "Youth Prevention" jobs at the company.

Just this week, Juul Labs announced that it would stop selling fruit-flavored vaping pods in Canada, in a move that Reuters noted could help the company "stave off mounting scrutiny over the surging popularity of its products with teenager." In the meantime, it'll be hiring dozens of professionals to help keep Juul ahead of how it markets to young people, as we see here.
About the Data:
Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online - jobs, social and web traffic, product sales, and app ratings - and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue, and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
