On September 23, 2016, Marriott ($MAR) acquired Starwood Hotels and Resorts for $13.6 billion, creating the world's largest hotel company with a mind-bending 1.1 million rooms, 30 brands, and close to 6,000 properties.
The acquisition also moved Marriott more into the international arena, as Starwood's hotels are 75% non-US based. It was the largest acquisition in the hotel space since 2007 when Blackstone acquired Hilton for $26 billion.
